Settling into the summer studio in southwest Nova Scotia. Before leaving Fredericton, I built these three panels; then photographed them, cleaned them up in Photoshop, and turned them into line drawings which can be printed out and used as the basis for pencil sketching. Ink you can’t erase, so it represents the shape and cutouts of the panels, the given that can’t be altered. The line is the canon.

These panels are held together on the back with mending plates in places where they don’t have to show. Where the gaps make wide stripsof negative space, I’ve been using large galvanized nails, which have their own rough beauty.

How will I paint them? Lately, though no mathematician, I’ve been thinking about fractals. They fascinate me in an unschooled way.
